1. Personal Background: He was born in Bristol, in 1950. He studied at the London College of Printing for a Higher Diploma in Creative Photography from 1969 to 1972. In the 1970’s, he began to photograph the landscape in south-west England, mostly recording changes in a specific place over months or years. One of his first works showed a small stream over a period of 5 years, and how tin mining nearby affected it.
2. Style: His work is a mix between documentary and landscape, and I think he likes to do sort of a colder theme, with more bland colors, like the pale blues of water bodies, white snow, or gray beachside bluffs/cliffs.
3. Philosophy: I think they reflect his personal style, because with all his photos you can sort of sense a theme, even lake. You can see how he highlights the water, making it more important than just the background. Though some are different, like his photos of a stream through a forest, vs. a rocky beach in front of a lake.
4. Influences: I like how he takes the bland colors/aspects of a scene, and makes them interesting, like with lots of ripples/rough edges, or stark contrast from a tree-line to the water. He’s influenced me to recognize boring surfaces as potential for contrast or theme setting.
